Singing comes naturally to Mort. His father was a tenor with the Metropolitan Opera
Company in New York City and a cantor. He encouraged young Mort to sing whenever and
wherever possible. And Mort did - in the temple choir and in the high school glee club.
He studied classical piano, but he played pop music too.
While Mort was dating his bride-to-be he used to sing in her ear as they danced. She thought, "This boy cannot carry a tune." She was right; he would automatically sing the harmony. Both his daughters, granddaughter and grandson have inherited his musical abilities. There was always music in the home with piano, violin, guitar and, of course, singing. After working 34 years in the Post Office in NYC, Mort retired and moved with his wife to Boca Raton, Florida. He promptly formed a chorus with his neighbors. One of the members told him about a barbershop chorus in the area. And so, Mort's Barbershop career began. In 1990 he joined the Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA)and has been a member ever since. |
